IT Services: About us Working at The University of Manchester About This Role IT Services is responsible for running one of the largest lecture capture systems in the world, with hundreds of recording systems, hundreds of thousands of users and millions of views annually. The primary focus of this role is to take the lead on the software development, testing, deployment and operations of existing open source multi-stream audio-video applications. Galicaster forms the core recording application for the lecture capture service and customisations, changes and improvements are required for ongoing and future projects. The core of this work is the software integration between the classroom audio/video systems improvements to monitoring systems and deployment and configuration management software. The team you will join (Media Technologies) utilises a DevOps approach to system management and deployment and it would be expected that the post holder will play a hands-on role with the hardware on which the application runs. This would include troubleshoot issues between the application, OS, hardware systems and audio/video systems they are dependent on. The successful applicant will have demonstrable experience of building production apps with Python. It's expected the applicant have substantial previous experience in a software developer role or equivalent and is proficient in a Linux environment. Previous experience writing audio/video software solutions utilising GStreamer and FFmpeg is highly desirable. This role has opportunities in taking the lead with aspects of the existing service, directing and working with other members of the team to bring new features and continuous delivery while maintaining stability. Currently there is a lot of innovation in this domain and the successful applicant will be participating in a larger open source community that spans the globe. Essential role requirements: Demonstrable previous professional experience developing software using Python. An accomplished Linux user, fully competent with the command line and file systems common to Ubuntu and Linux applications. Proficient with configuration management tools like ansible or puppet Experience with CI/CD platforms such as jenkins Experience working with Version Control Systems (VCS) particularly git. Proficiency debugging both software and hardware problems. Previous examples of Problem-solving using code, having used novel methods to achieve a fix or work-around. Previous experience writing code both in a team and independently using judgment and initiative. Self-directed learning is essential to success in this role Examples of using good, proactive problem solving and analysis skills in your previous roles Demonstrate initiative in your work and make judgement calls when necessary. Desirable: Previous experience of software development with video and audio using FFmpeg, Gstreamer or similar. Writing software to consume RESTful APIs. Experience developing software to run on single board computers, embedded hardware or microcontrollers. Experience with test driven development (TDD) processes. An understanding of UX design principles Previous experience of working with AWS (amazon web services) and deploying services to AWS. Examples of bringing software/hardware innovations to previous roles. Previous experience of working in a Higher Education environment.
