Position Summary:

The Actuarial Analyst will provide support to the Actuarial Department in the areas of product pricing, experience analysis, rate filings, rate implementation, and competitive analysis, as well as other ad hoc projects. The Actuarial Analyst will learn about the health insurance business, the actuarial profession, the strategies of the company, and the data systems used by the department. Depending on degree status, the position can be offered on a full-time or part-time basis. (A current student could possibly be employed on an internship basis.)

Key Job Functions:

Projects will include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with construction of monthly experience database and preparation of actual-to-expected loss ratios report
  • Develop new data reports to study areas of interest (examples: claims, sales, persistency)
  • Draft documents required for state rate increase filings
  • Update rate tables and track statuses of rate increase implementations
  • Collect benefit and rate information from competitor products
  • Provide ad hoc support to Chief Actuary and other department staff, as needed

Performance Standards:

Qualifications: Graduate or current student of 4-year university, studying actuarial science or related field, pursuing credentials from the Society of Actuaries (taking exams)

Education, Training, and Certification or Licenses Required:

-Completion (or current pursuit of) Bachelor’s Degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, or related field

- Pursuing credential from Society of Actuaries, with at least 1 exam attempted (preferred: 1 exam passed)

- Moderate experience in Microsoft Office applications, and some experience in a data querying language

Experience Required:

Previous actuarial internship experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills/General Abilities Required:

  • Business Knowledge: Basic understanding of health insurance products, general insurance terminology, and actuarial concepts
  • Computer Skills: Moderate knowledge of Excel, Word, and a query language such as SQL
  • Communication Skills: Ability to write reports and memos, to document procedures, and to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral or written form
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with large amounts of data, mathematical/actuarial concepts such as rating formulas, and general statistical and analytical processes
  • Organizational Skills: Effective organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to apply actuarial concepts and mathematical/statistical analysis to company data.
  • Ability to solve complex and practical problems and to understand deal with a variety of concrete variables.
  • Ability to handle multiple project assignments from multiple parties
